Zero-waste ONLINE stores – our favourites for 2020

An invention that shaped and transformed our lives (arguably for the better) has now become our environment’s biggest enemy. The problem with plastics largely lies within ‘single-use’ plastics. Nearly half of all plastic ever manufactured has been made since 2000. Forty percent of plastic produced is packaging, and it’s used just once and then discarded. This toxic matter fills our landfills, oceans and rivers with tons of plastic that breaks down into micro plastics that last ‘forever’, choking our waterways and killing ocean life.

If the issue is single-use plastic, society needs to redesign the way we shop. By removing all plastic packaging and selling produce by weight, you bring along your own glass jars and reusable grocery bags that can be reused time and time again (and store your goodies in them). Reduction of waste and a ‘greener’ change in how we generally operate is what brought about the much-needed concept of waste-free shops.

It’s so great to see that there are now so many options available when looking for zero-waste shops locally. And because we are pro-convenience, here are five local online establishments that are adapting to the present change in consumerism and continuing to push the #WasteFreeLifestyle:

1. Shop Zero
Woodstock, Cape Town

2. The Refillery
Cedar Square, Fourways

3. The Daily Goods Store
Muizenberg, Cape Town

4. The Unwrapped Co
Blairgowrie, Randburg

5. Faithful to Nature
Muizenberg, Cape Town

Shopping consciously is an important step to reducing our daily consumption of single use, non-compostable packaging and living more sustainably. Consumers are changing the game for society’s buying habits, and shopping at plastic-free and zero-waste establishments are great ways to shift towards a plastic free existence – one step at a time. I
